USANA Hepasil Puts Focus on the Nutritional Side of Liver Support

The liver performs a wide range of essential functions, from processing nutrients to filtering substances from the blood. That workload has also made liver health a growing area of interest within the supplement market, where products increasingly combine botanical ingredients with nutrients involved in antioxidant and metabolic processes.

USANA Hepasil takes this multi-ingredient approach, bringing together milk thistle extract, N-acetyl L-cysteine, alpha-lipoic acid and several plant-derived ingredients in a single formulation. Rather than focusing on one ingredient, the formula illustrates how liver-support supplements are increasingly being developed around several complementary nutritional components.

Looking at the Hepasil Formula

Milk thistle is one of the more recognizable ingredients associated with liver-support supplements. USANA’s product information lists 240 milligrams of milk thistle extract per three-tablet serving, standardized to contain 80% silymarin.

Hepasil also contains 225 milligrams of N-acetyl L-cysteine, or NAC, and 200 milligrams of alpha-lipoic acid per serving. The formula includes choline, biotin, broccoli concentrate, decaffeinated green tea extract, olive extract and turmeric extract.

The combination reflects an approach that extends beyond the familiar milk thistle ingredient.

Choline, for example, is an essential nutrient involved in normal liver function and lipid metabolism. NAC serves as a precursor to glutathione, while alpha-lipoic acid participates in cellular processes and has antioxidant properties.

Antioxidants Add Another Dimension

Several of Hepasil’s botanical ingredients also contribute antioxidant compounds. Green tea, turmeric, broccoli and olive-derived ingredients have each attracted research interest for their naturally occurring plant compounds.

Antioxidants help address oxidative stress, which occurs when the production of reactive molecules exceeds the body’s ability to neutralize them. The body has its own antioxidant defense systems, while diet supplies additional antioxidant nutrients and plant compounds.

The presence of several such ingredients in Hepasil demonstrates how supplement formulations can combine established nutrients with botanical extracts rather than relying on a single component.

Product Quality Remains Essential

Ingredient selection is only one consideration when evaluating a supplement. Manufacturing standards, potency and consistency also matter, particularly for products containing multiple active ingredients.

USANA’s product documentation states that Hepasil is laboratory tested and meets applicable U.S. Pharmacopeia specifications for potency, uniformity and disintegration. Hepasil DTX was also among 11 USANA products added to the Prescribers’ Digital Reference in 2024.

Those details give consumers additional information to consider alongside the ingredient panel.

Putting Liver Supplements in Context

No supplement can substitute for the broader habits associated with maintaining liver health. Diet, alcohol consumption, medication use, physical activity and existing health conditions can all influence liver function.

Consumers should also recognize that botanical ingredients and supplements can interact with medications. USANA’s labeling advises people who are pregnant, nursing, taking prescription drugs or managing a medical condition to consult a physician before using Hepasil.

Hepasil provides an example of how the category has evolved toward multi-ingredient formulations. Its combination of milk thistle, NAC, alpha-lipoic acid and botanical extracts puts the emphasis on several nutritional pathways rather than a single ingredient — an approach that gives consumers more to examine when comparing products.
